The compass in Esperanto is a small closed set of nouns - , , , - from which everything else derives predictably. Norda is northern, norde is in the north or northwards as a static adverb, and norden with the accusative of direction is specifically towards the north. That last distinction is worth drilling: norde means he lives up north, norden means he set off in that direction. Nordokcidento for northwest is written solid.
