From Latin operatio, the noun of operari ('to work'), from opus ('a work'). The Latin ending -atio arrived attached, so the word came into Esperanto in one piece.

There is no -aci- suffix in Esperanto, so do not try to peel one off here. The root is -, borrowed whole, and the -acio you can see is Latin -atio in Esperanto spelling rather than anything the language builds with. The verb is operacii, and a surgeon operacias a patient, while i would be a different word altogether.
