origin, source; beginning
Word origin
From Latin origo, stem origin-, a beginning or source, from oriri, to rise. The same verb gives the rising sun its name in oriento, the east, so origin and orient are two views of one image.

Examples

.
Nobody knows the origin of that story.
.
The river has its source in the mountains.
Read this one as a single root, because the shape lies. The ending looks like orig- plus the feminine -in-, the suffix that turns into , and it is nothing of the sort: there is no root orig- in Esperanto and no female anything here. The whole of - came in from Latin in one piece. It is a useful warning about the affix system generally - the suffixes are real and productive, but they are not permission to slice up every word that happens to contain their letters. Compare the genuine builds , to come from, and , a spring or source, both of which say much the same thing in native material.
