parkerigi

Decode it and you get a small surprise.Parkere at 2,492 is the adverb "by heart", one of the handful of Esperanto adverbs that are lemmas in their own right. Add the causative -ig- and you have "to make by-heart" - which is what memorising is, once you say it plainly. Parkerigi la poemon is to get the poem into the state of being known by heart. There is no parkero to build it from, because the root only ever comes out as the adverb and this verb.

Both readings are live, and al is what separates them. -Ig- means "cause to be", and it does not specify who ends up in that state, so parkerigi covers the learner and the teacher alike. Mi parkerigis la kanton is I memorised the song. La instruisto parkerigis al ni la tabelon is the teacher drilled the table into us. The reflexive parkeriĝi is for the thing itself: a tune that ends up memorised without anyone deciding to memorise it. And parkerigo is the noun - rote learning, the thing language teachers have been arguing about since the corpus this list is drawn from was written.

Is it any good as a study method? It is the floor, not the ceiling, and the site's guide to learning Esperanto puts it in its place: knowing a word parkere means you can produce the gloss, which is not the same as being able to use it. Spaced repetition is there to stop the leak; graded reading and speaking are what turn a memorised word into a usable one. But parkerigi earns its keep on the things that genuinely have to be exact - the sixteen rules, the correlative table, the affix list, a poem you want to be able to say. Memori is what your brain does on its own; parkerigi is what you do to it deliberately.
