Translation
parliament
Word origin
From French parlement, from parler ('to speak'), so a speaking-place. Esperanto's own paroli comes from the same French verb, which makes parlamento and paroli distant relatives that no longer look alike.
- Origin
- French
- Root
- parler
- English cognates
- parliament, parley, parlour
Examples
.
Parliament passed the new law.
.
She spoke before the whole parliament.
.
People from every party sit in parliament.
Worth pausing on the family resemblance: and both
descend from French parler, but Esperanto borrowed them at different
times and in different shapes, so the link is invisible unless somebody
points it out. Note also that Esperanto keeps the article where English
drops it. British newspapers write "Parliament passed the law"; Esperanto
says , because it is an institution like any other.
