Translation
landscape, scenery
Word origin
From French paysage, from pays ('country'), which goes back to Late Latin pagensis, someone belonging to a pagus or rural district. English peasant and pagan come from the same country district.
- Origin
- French
- Root
- pagus
- English cognates
- peasant, pagan
Examples
.
The landscape around the lake is very beautiful.
.
He painted the landscape of the wide valley.
.
From the window we saw the whole landscape.
The ending is a trap for the eye. -aĝo is not the suffix -aĵo: the letters are ĝ and ĵ, one hat apart, and - is a single root borrowed whole from French rather than pejza- plus a suffix meaning a concrete thing. The word covers both the view itself and a painting of it, so a o is a landscape painter and pejzaĝa o is the picture.
