Strictly intransitive: the thing hangs, and nobody is hanging it. To do the hanging you need the causative i, which also covers the gallows sense. English uses one verb for both jobs, so is the standard beginner error and means something closer to he dangled from the picture. o is a pendant, and - to depend on - is built from the same root.
