Word origin
From German Platte and French plat, both from a late Latin plattus, flat, which itself came from Greek platys. The word travelled as a piece of kitchen equipment and picked up the sense of the food on it along the way.

Three near-identical words, three different objects, and it is worth fixing them now. A is the plate you eat off. A is the big serving dish that goes in the middle of the table, and by the ordinary extension it is also what is on it: is the main course, nacia a national dish. A plato is a flat slab of something - a metal sheet, a paving stone, a record. The shared idea is flatness, but only belongs to food, and plato is the one English speakers reach for by mistake because it looks like "plate".
