Translation
poetry
Word origin
From Greek poiesis, 'a making', from poiein ('to make'), reaching Esperanto through Latin poesis and the modern European languages. A poem is, at root, a made thing.
- Origin
- Greek, via Latin
- Root
- poiesis
- English cognates
- poetry, poem, poet
Examples
.
He wrote poetry in Esperanto.
.
She reads poetry every evening.
.
The young poet loves the poetry of the sea.
Three words from one root, and Esperanto keeps them tidier than English does: is the art, a is one piece of it, and a is the person. Esperanto poetry is also where you meet Rule 16, the elision that turns into ' to save a syllable when the line demands it.
