From Greek prophetes, from pro- ('forth, before') plus phanai ('to speak'), so one who speaks forth on another's behalf. It reached Esperanto through Latin propheta and the modern European languages.

A false seam worth naming: this is not pro- plus feto. Esperanto does have feto for a foetus, and pro for 'because of', and neither has anything to do with the word. - is one Greek root borrowed entire. The feminine is o, the verb is profeti, and a prophecy is o.
