The core meaning is a ray or beam - of sunlight, of hope, and in geometry the radius of a circle. The broadcasting sense also lives here as radio, which means context carries most of the load: is listening to the wireless, radio is a sunbeam. Some writers prefer radiofonio for the broadcasting sense to keep the two apart, but it never fully took. The verb radii means to radiate or beam, and works metaphorically: radiis, her face was beaming.
