A word of caution about the look of it: comes from the international root for an area and has nothing to do with , to rule, or with , a state or realm. Those two are genuinely related to each other; only resembles them. Use for a stretch of territory defined by geography or custom, for a country with borders, for countryside as opposed to town, and for a specific spot. The adjective is the usual word for regional in the sense of local administration.
