The diminutive of rivero, which came through French riviere from Latin riparia, land along a riverbank, from ripa ('bank'). The river is named after its edge rather than its water.

This is a real affix build and a good one to learn on: river- plus -- plus -o, a little river. English needs a whole separate word, brook or stream; Esperanto gets it from a suffix you already know from and . The direction of the derivation matters for guessing: -- shrinks and -- enlarges, so o is a great river, and neither has to be looked up.
