Word origin
From Latin scaena, from Greek skene, which first meant a tent. Greek actors changed behind a hut at the back of the playing area, so the hut gave its name to the stage and then to what happens on it.

carries the two English senses at once: the physical stage and the stretch of a play or film performed on it. When you mean the wider look of a place rather than a performance, Esperanto reaches for instead. The word is also the sharp end of an argument, , exactly as in English.
