is a mark that stands for something: a gesture, a written character, an omen. Signi is to mark, is to mean, and is to sign your name, which has nothing to do with this root at all. For the board hanging outside a shop, Esperanto uses rather than - the distinction is between a meaning and an object, and English blurs it where Esperanto does not.
