Be quiet, the child is sleeping.
means making no sound. is calm or untroubled, is peaceful, is soft rather than absent - English "quiet" spreads across all four, so pick by what you actually mean. The root gives the verb silenti (to keep silent), (silence), i (to silence someone) and the very useful adverb silente. Silentu! is the blunt "be quiet", and it is as sharp in Esperanto as it looks.
