Read the word as one root. is not - plus -u- plus -o, and it has nothing to do with the correlative endings: Esperanto has no -u- suffix that could build it. It is a single borrowing, -, and it stands apart from (a state or condition) and (a country), two words learners routinely tangle with it. Handy accident, though: all three trace back to Latin stare, standing.
