Army-leading. Stratos is an army, agein is to lead, and a strategos was the elected commander of an Athenian army - the office Pericles held ten years running. Strategia was what he did. The word means generalship, and that is the whole of it until the twentieth century picks it up and starts applying it to marketing.

The agein half is worth a moment, because it is everywhere: it gives agent, act, agenda, agile and demagogue - literally a people-leader. Stratos gives stratagem and, at a stretch, the strat- of stratocracy. Neither piece is available to you in Esperanto. This is a single borrowed root.

The false seam here is the country suffix. Esperanto builds country names from a people with -i-: anglo gives Anglio, franco gives Francio, as the landoj kaj popoloj article sets out at length. So strateg-io parses as the land of the strategs, which is funny, wrong and exactly the same mistake the nazio page warns about with naz-io, the land of the noses. The -io in strategio is part of the borrowed word. There is no such person as a *stratego.

Strategy against tactics. The distinction survives the translation intact. Strategio is the long plan, the shape of the whole campaign; taktiko is what you do in the next ten minutes. A general has one strategio and many taktikoj. The adjective is strategia and the adverb strategie.

Where you actually meet it. Military history, obviously, and ŝako, where Esperanto's chess vocabulary is surprisingly rich. But also every organisation with a committee: la strategio de la asocio, longtempa strategio, ŝanĝi la strategion. If that use grates in English it grates here too, and the plainer word is usually plano, which has been available since rank 988 and asks less of the reader.
