Word origin

Assembled inside Esperanto: suno plus subiri plus the noun ending. Suno is from Latin sol and Germanic sun, and subiri is sub, under, plus iri, to go.

Origin
Esperanto compound
Root
suno + subiri

Examples

.

We sat on the mountain until sunset.

.

The sunset over the sea was entirely red.

.

After sunset the air turns cold.

Three pieces, no surprises. Suno is the sun. Subiri is plus , to go under, and it is the ordinary verb for a heavenly body dropping below the horizon. Add -o and you have the event: sunset.

Once you see the pattern the rest of the day comes free. Sunleviĝo, which arrived at rank 2,936, is sunrise; sunlumo is sunlight; sunbrilo is sunshine. Esperanto does not ask you to learn a separate word for any of them.

A note on the form. You will also meet sunsubiĝo, built on i rather than . Both are used and both are understood; is the form the dictionaries lead with, so it is the one to say.
