Word origin
From the name of a Mongol-era tribe recorded in Chinese sources as ta-ta, which spread until it covered the Turkic and Mongol armies as a whole. In western Europe it was reshaped as Tartar, probably under the pull of Tartarus, the classical underworld.

Who the word names. The Tatars are a Turkic people, several million strong, most of whom live in European Russia: in Tatarstan on the middle Volga, in Bashkiria, in the Urals and in Siberia, with a distinct Crimean Tatar community as well. Their language belongs to the Kipchak branch of Turkic and has a written literature going back to the thirteenth century.
How to use the word, and the spelling to keep. is the adjective, tataro a Tatar person, tataroj the people. Note that Esperanto has the one t: the English Tartar, with an extra r, is a medieval European mangling of the name, and both the language and modern English usage prefer Tatar. Related but separate: ruso is a Russian, which is not the same thing, and plenty of Tatars are citizens of Russia without being Russians.
