Translation
to tempt
Word origin
From Latin temptare, to test or to try, which is also where English tempt, attempt and tentative come from. The moral colouring arrived later, through the biblical sense of putting somebody to the test.

Do not tempt fate.
One letter from trouble. is to tempt; is to hold; tendi is to stretch out, and tenĝi is not a word at all. Nothing about derives from with a -t- on it, the two are separate Latin roots that happen to look alike in Esperanto's tidy spelling. The noun is tento (a temptation) and the tempter is a tentanto.
