vestiblo

The false seam, and an honest complication. In Esperanto, vestiblo is one borrowed root. It is not vesti plus anything. There is no suffix -blo, and the suffix that does exist, -ebl-, means capable of: videbla is visible, manĝebla is edible. If vestiblo were built the way it looks, it would mean something like a wearable, which an entrance hall is not.

So far so ordinary. The complication is that the Latin word may genuinely be related to clothing after all. Vestibulum was the space between the street and the door of a Roman house, and one long-standing explanation - repeated by Roman authors themselves - links it to vestis, a garment, as the place where you dressed for outdoors. Another account, preferred by several modern etymologists, splits it as ve- plus stabulum, the standing-place set apart. Nobody has proved either, and this page gives you both rather than picking one.

What does not change is the practical rule. In Esperanto you cannot take vestiblo apart. Whatever the Romans were thinking, the word arrived here whole, vesto at rank 237 is a separate root doing separate work, and building vestiblo out of vest- would be reconstructing a two-thousand-year-old guess rather than using the language.

Vestiblo is the entrance hall of a house or the lobby of a hotel: the room you are in before you are properly inside. A koridoro at rank 1619 leads somewhere; a halo at rank 2208 is big and public; a vestiblo is the threshold made into a room.
