attendre or espérer?

Attendre is not to attend, and it is not to hope either.

The rule

attendre is to WAIT for something, and it needs no preposition: j'attends le train. esperer is to HOPE. English speakers see attendre and think attend, then use it for hoping, which is a false friend twice over.
