Question words
qui, que, quoi, quand, ou, comment, combien, pourquoi - plus the three ways French builds a question: intonation, est-ce que, and inversion.
The short version
Quoi cannot open a question
Qui asks about people, que about things, and quoi is the form used after a preposition or at the end of a sentence. Quoi fais-tu is wrong: it is que fais-tu, or qu'est-ce que tu fais. In casual speech quoi does drift to the end, as in tu fais quoi, and that is fine spoken.
À quoi penses-tu?
That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
