avoir or etre: choosing the auxiliary
Most verbs take avoir. A closed set of seventeen movement and change-of-state verbs takes etre, and so does every reflexive verb without exception. With etre the past participle agrees with the subject, and six verbs take both auxiliaries with a change of meaning.
