Today is Papa's birthday. Mum, Emma and Hugo want to do a surprise. It is a secret. They say nothing to Papa. Papa does not know. He thinks it is a day like any other.

In the morning, Papa goes to work. Mum is happy. "Quick!" she says. "Papa is not here. We have little time." Mum and the children have a lot to do.

They put beautiful things everywhere in the house. Emma puts the presents on the table. Hugo puts out something good to eat. The house is beautiful now. Everything is ready for the party.

Papa's friends arrive too. They come in very quietly. There are lots of people in the house, but everyone is calm.
" !" . ", !" . . . .
"Papa is coming home!" says Mum. "Quick, everyone!" The people wait behind the door. They wait in the dark. Nobody speaks. Nobody moves.

At last, Papa arrives. He opens the door. The house is in the dark. "Is there no one?" Papa thinks. "Where is my family?"
. : " ! !" . . .
Mum turns on the light. Everyone says very loudly: "Surprise! Happy birthday!" Papa is scared for a second. Then he sees his family and his friends. He sees the presents and the table.

Papa is very happy. He does not know what to say. "For me? All this for me?" Mum is happy. "Yes, Papa!" say the children. "It is your party!" Papa is a year older today, but he is happy like a child.

Everyone eats together. There is something good on the table. Papa opens his presents. The friends talk and the children play.

In the evening, Papa takes Emma and Hugo in his arms. "Thank you," he says. "It is the most beautiful day." The surprise went well. And Papa will never forget this party.
