Perdu en ville

Story

Marc arrive à Lyon ce matin. C'est une grande ville, et il ne la connaît pas. Aujourd'hui, il a un rendez-vous. Il doit voir son amie Sophie à trois heures, dans un café, sur une place. Mais il ne sait pas où est cette place.

Marc arrives in Lyon this morning. It is a big city, and he does not know it. Today, he has a meeting. He has to see his friend Sophie at three o'clock, in a café, on a square. But he does not know where this square is.

Marc marche dans les rues. Il regarde à droite, puis à gauche. Toutes les rues sont pareilles. Il marche longtemps, mais il ne trouve pas le café. Il est perdu. Il n'a pas de plan de la ville. Le temps passe, et bientôt il va être en retard.

Marc walks along the streets. He looks to the right, then to the left. All the streets look the same. He walks a good while, but he does not find the café. He is lost. He has no map of the city. Time passes, and soon he is going to be late.

Marc a un peu peur. Il ne veut pas arriver trop tard. Alors il cherche quelqu'un. Devant une porte, il voit une vieille dame. Elle est gentille. Marc va vers elle. « Pardon, madame, » dit-il. « Je cherche la place du café. Vous savez où elle est ? »

Marc is a little afraid. He does not want to arrive too late. So he looks for someone. In front of a door, he sees an old lady. She is kind. Marc goes over to her. "Pardon me, madam," he says. "I am looking for the café square. Do you know where it is?"

La dame regarde Marc. Puis elle montre la rue avec la main. « Ce n'est pas loin, » dit-elle. « Allez tout droit. Après, prenez la première rue à droite. Bientôt, vous allez voir Notre-Dame. Passez devant Notre-Dame. Le café est juste derrière, sur la place. »

The lady looks at Marc. Then she points to the street with her hand. "It is not far," she says. "Go straight ahead. After that, take the first street on the right. Soon, you are going to see Notre-Dame, the old church. Walk past Notre-Dame. The café is just behind it, on the square."

« Merci beaucoup, madame ! » dit Marc. Il est heureux. Maintenant, il sait où aller. Il marche vite. Il va tout droit, comme la dame a dit. Puis il prend la rue à droite. Et là, devant lui, il voit Notre-Dame. La vieille dame avait raison.

"Thank you very much, madam!" says Marc. He is glad. Now he knows where to go. He walks fast. He goes straight ahead, as the lady said. Then he takes the street on the right. And there, in front of him, he sees Notre-Dame. The old lady was right.

Marc passe devant Notre-Dame. Derrière, il y a une petite place, avec un café. Sophie est là ! Elle attend, à une table. Marc regarde l'heure : il est trois heures, juste. Il n'est pas en retard. Il arrive à l'heure.

Marc walks past Notre-Dame. Behind it, there is a little square, with a café. Sophie is there! She is waiting, at a table. Marc looks at the time: it is three o'clock, exactly. He is not late. He arrives on time.

« Te voilà ! » dit Sophie. « Tu as trouvé le café ! » « Oui, » dit Marc. « J'étais perdu. Mais une gentille dame m'a montré le chemin. » Marc est très heureux. Dans cette grande ville, il n'a plus peur. Maintenant, il sait qu'on peut toujours demander son chemin.

"There you are!" says Sophie. "You found the café!" "Yes," says Marc. "I was lost. But a kind lady showed me the way." Marc is very glad. In this big city, he is no longer afraid. Now he knows that you can always ask the way.
