Accedo, accedere, accessi, accessum, third conjugation: ad plus cedo, "go towards", with the d assimilated. The ordinary construction is ad with the accusative; a bare dative turns up in verse and in later prose, and place names take the plain accusative like any verb of motion.
The second sense is where the word earns its rank. Accedit quod, "to this is added the fact that", is how Roman writers stack an argument, and accedere ad sententiam is to come round to someone's opinion, which is exactly English accede. Two traps: the perfect is accessi, not accedi, and accido, "to happen", is a different verb one letter away that shares no principal parts.
