Aedes, aedis, f., third declension, and the number changes the meaning outright. In the singular it is a temple: one chamber, one god, and no need for an adjective. In the plural aedes means a private house, a set of rooms grouped round a hearth. That is not two words that happen to look alike but one word counted differently, and dictionaries list it both ways.
Against domus, which is the household and the home as an institution, aedes is the building. The root is the hearth-fire, which is why aedifico, "to build", and aedilis, the magistrate responsible for public works, come from it, and English edifice and aedile after them. The i-stem shows in the genitive plural aedium.
