Anima, animae, f., first declension. It begins as moving air and breath, becomes the breath of life, and ends as the soul.

Latin keeps a pair here and the distinction matters when you translate. Anima is the life principle, the thing that stops when breathing stops, and animals have one. Animus is mind, will, courage and temper, and it is where decisions are taken. Christian writers put nearly all the weight on anima, which is why this corpus is thick with animae, and the dative and ablative plural takes the archaic form animabus to keep it distinct from animis. English took animal, animate and unanimous from the family, and anima itself as a loanword.
