Capitulum, capituli, n., second declension: the diminutive of caput, so literally "a little head". Classical Latin uses it for a small head and for the capital of a column, and both senses survive in architecture.
The meaning that fills this corpus is later. A capitulum is a division of a text, a chapter, and then by a short jump the body of clergy who assembled daily to hear one read aloud. That is the whole explanation of why an English cathedral has both chapters in its statutes and a chapter house to read them in, and why a religious order still holds a general chapter. Watch for the irregular plural capitulia beside the regular capitula in this material; scribes were not consistent. English chapter and capital both come through French from the same head.
