Clam is an adverb first, "secretly", and it doubles as a preposition meaning "unknown to". As a preposition it takes the ablative or the accusative and both are attested: clam patre and clam patrem are equally good Latin, which is unusual enough to be worth remembering.

Its opposite is palam, "openly", and the two often stand together in a single breath - clam an palam, in secret or in the open. The root is the one behind celo, "hide", and English takes clandestine from the adjective clandestinus built on it.
