Tacite is the adverb of tacitus, which is the perfect participle of taceo left standing as an adjective in its own right.
It covers real silence and also the tacit kind: a thing understood without anybody saying it, which is the sense English keeps in tacit consent and tacit agreement. Keep it distinct from clam. Clam is deliberate concealment, doing something so that a particular person does not find out; tacite is simply without words, and it can be entirely open. The two overlap often enough to blur, and they are not interchangeable.
