Exemplum, exempli, n., is second declension, from eximo, "take out" - a sample lifted out of the mass to stand for the rest. Three senses that matter. A model to copy: exemplum dare, "set an example". A warning made out of somebody: exemplum statuere in aliquem, "make an example of him", which in practice meant an execution the neighbours could see. And a copy or transcript of a document, which is how exemplar, exemplify and "sample" all arrive in English.
Exempli gratia, "for the sake of an example", is where e.g. comes from, and it is not interchangeable with id est. If you can swap in "namely", you wanted i.e.
