Fluvius, fluvii, m., second declension, from fluo like its rival flumen. Latin has three ordinary words for a river and the handbooks give them tidy distinctions: flumen is the neutral prose word, fluvius leans poetic and, in later writers, geographical, and amnis is properly the large river you can put a boat on.
That is the theory. In practice no text keeps to it, and a chronicler naming the rivers of a province will use whichever fits the sentence. Take the distinction as a tendency and never as evidence. The adjective is fluvialis, "of a river", and Vulgate Latin uses fluvius freely for the rivers of Eden and of Babylon. English fluvial is technical; fluent, fluid and flux come off the same verb.
