Ripa, ripae, f., first declension. It is specifically the bank of a river or a lake. The edge of the sea is litus, the strip where the surf breaks, or ora, the coastline seen whole - and using ripa for the seaside is the mistake a Latin reader will notice first.
Ad ripam and in ripa do the ordinary work, and military writers use ripas in the plural for both sides of a crossing. The word survives everywhere: Italian riva, French rive and rivage, Spanish ribera, and through French into English river, arrive and riparian.
