Gloria, gloriae, f., first declension. In classical prose it is two-faced. Used of a general or a state it is honourable renown, the thing worth dying for. Used of a person talking about himself it slides into empty boasting, which is why Plautus called his braggart soldier the Miles Gloriosus and meant nothing flattering by it.
The ecclesiastical corpus almost never uses the pejorative sense. There gloria is the glory that belongs to God, fixed in liturgical tags like gloria in excelsis and gloria patri, and the word is a straight positive. English took glory, glorify and glorious; Spanish gloria and French gloire continue it unchanged.
