Laus, laudis, f., third declension. The d of the stem is hidden by the s of the nominative, so laus looks nothing like the cases that follow it.
It covers both the act of praising and the praiseworthy quality itself, which means "credit" or "merit" is often a better English word than "praise": ea laus est illius, "that is to his credit". The plural laudes became a fixture of the liturgy, the office of Lauds being simply "the praises", and cum laude survives on degree certificates. Verb laudo, adjective laudabilis. Despite the look of it there is no connection with lavo, "to wash", or with the Greek laos.
