illic

Illic is ille plus the old deictic particle -ce: "in that place over there". Latin's place adverbs come in a matching three-way set with the demonstratives - hic here, istic there by you, illic yonder - and each has its own directional partners. Illic answers ubi, "where"; motion towards is illuc, motion away is illinc. Getting those three straight saves a lot of guessing.

The trap is that illic is also, in older writers, a form of the pronoun ille with the same -ce attached, meaning "that man there". Plautus uses it constantly. And in manuscripts illi (dative singular) and illic are abbreviated so similarly that editors sometimes have to choose. Read the case demands of the verb first.
