Impono, imponere, imposui, impositum is third conjugation, in- plus pono. The thing put upon goes in the dative, capiti imponere, or in the accusative with in where real motion is meant, in navem imponere. That split is worth holding on to, because it is the ordinary Latin distinction between resting on and being loaded onto.

Ecclesiastical Latin owns one phrase outright: "manus imponere", the laying on of hands at ordination or blessing, which is why impositio manuum turns up so often in this corpus. The trap is the other sense. With a dative of person and nothing else, imponere means to impose upon in the English sense of taking somebody in: "imposuit mihi" is he swindled me, not he loaded something on me.
