linea

Linea, lineae is a first declension feminine and it started as a thread: it is the feminine of lineus, "made of flax", from linum. A builder's stretched string becomes the geometer's line, the surveyor's boundary, the finishing line of a race, and eventually a line of descent.

The verb to use with it is duco: lineam ducere, "to draw a line", which is the same idiom English inherits in "draw". The trap is that a line of poetry is not linea but versus, and a line of writing on a page is more often versus or linea depending on the writer, so do not assume.
