Locus is second declension and masculine, but its plural splits in two and the split carries meaning. Loca, a neuter plural, means physical places or a stretch of country. Loci, the regular masculine plural, means passages in a book or topics in an argument. The ablative loco has a life of its own meaning 'instead of', and English local, locate and locus all descend from the noun.
