mentio

Mentio, mentionis is third declension feminine, from the same root as mens and memini: it is what you call to mind aloud.

Almost every occurrence is inside one idiom, mentionem facere, "to make mention", and the thing mentioned goes in the genitive: mentionem pacis facere, "to raise the subject of peace". The passive mentio fit, "mention is made", is equally common. Latin has no verb "to mention" of its own doing this work, so the noun-plus-facio phrase carries the whole load, which is why it turns up so often relative to its apparent usefulness. The nearest single verb is memoro. English mention comes straight through French from this noun and kept the meaning intact, which does not happen often enough to go unremarked.
