Meridies, meridiei, m., fifth declension, and one of only two masculines in it. The other is dies, which turns feminine when it means an appointed day, while meridies stays masculine throughout.
It is medius plus dies with the first d dissimilated away, so the word is literally "midday". The second sense follows from geography rather than metaphor: for anyone in the Mediterranean the noon sun stands in the south, so meridies is also that compass point, and ad meridiem means "southwards". Latin names the other three the same way, from oriens and occidens for the sunrise and sunset sides. English took meridian from it, and the meridiem of a.m. and p.m. is this word in the accusative.
