Monumentum, monumenti, n., second declension, from moneo: anything that reminds. Spelt monimentum in older texts, and both forms turn up in manuscripts.

Its range is wider than the English monument, which is why a literal translation so often lands wrong. It covers a written record, a memorial statue, a family archive, a literary work (Horace's exegi monumentum aere perennius) and, most commonly of all in surviving stone, the grave itself. On an inscription hoc monumentum heredem non sequitur is standard legal boilerplate meaning "this tomb does not pass to the heir", and rendering it "this statue" turns a property clause into nonsense. Read the context before you pick the English word.
