Motus, motus, m. Fourth declension, built on the supine stem of moveo, movere, movi, motum, and the genitive singular is identical to the nominative plural, so context does the work.
Three senses run together. Physical movement is the base: terrae motus, "movement of the earth", is the Latin for an earthquake. Political movement is disturbance, and motus in a province means an uprising, not a march. Inner movement is emotion, and motus animi is the standard classical phrase for a feeling, which is exactly the metaphor buried in the English word emotion. The same stem gives motive, motor and momentum.
