nomino

Nomino, nominare, nominavi, nominatum, first conjugation, formed directly on nomen, nominis. It is a double-accusative verb: nominare aliquem consulem, "to name someone consul", and in the passive the second accusative surfaces as a nominative, consul nominatur.

The grammarians took the same root for the case that names, casus nominativus. The trap is English. Our "nominate" has drifted towards putting someone forward as a candidate, and while the Latin does cover appointment to office, its centre of gravity is the plain act of calling by name. Alongside it sit voco, "call", and appello, "address, call upon", and Latin authors move between the three without much system, so do not build an argument on which one an author chose.
