Nomen, nominis is third declension neuter, and once again the genitive is the key: the stem is nomin-, which supplies nominate, nominal and, by way of French, the word noun itself. To ask someone's name Latin normally uses the dative of the person, quod est nomen tibi, literally what is the name to you. A Roman citizen carried three of these, the tria nomina, as in Gaius Iulius Caesar.
