Translation

to offer, present; to bring before

Examples

offert.

oblata .

Offerre .

I am ready to offer help.

Offero, offerre, obtuli, oblatum: an irregular compound of fero with ob-, and the principal parts are the whole difficulty. Nothing in obtuli or oblatum looks like offero, because the perfect and supine come from an entirely different root that fero borrowed long ago. Anyone hunting the corpus for offer- will simply miss obtulit and obtulerat.

It takes a direct object and a dative of the person. In the ecclesiastical corpus it is the sacrificial verb above all others, which is where oblation, offertory and plain English offer come from.
