Pactum, pacti, n., second declension, the perfect participle of paciscor pressed into service as a noun: the thing agreed.
It has two lives and the second is much the commoner. As a real noun it is a bargain or treaty, and pacta servanda are terms you are held to. But in the ablative it has hardened into a fixed adverbial phrase of manner: hoc pacto, quo pacto, nullo pacto, alio pacto - in this way, how, by no means, otherwise. Reading nullo pacto as "by no treaty" produces confident nonsense, and it is the single most likely misstep with this word.
